Anlo Dukor delegation engages James Gunu, over coastal erosion and infrastructural challenges

A high-powered delegation of chiefs and political leaders from the Anlo Dukor, led by the Awadada, Togbi Agbesi Awusu II, has paid a courtesy call on the Volta Regional Minister, Mr James Gunu, to deliberate on pressing developmental concerns affecting the Anlo State.

The delegation, acting under the authority of the Awormefia of the Anlo State, Togbi Sri III, used the meeting to highlight critical challenges confronting the area, particularly the persistent coastal sea erosion along the Volta coastline and the deteriorating condition of key road networks within the enclave.

Among the major concerns raised were the deplorable state of several strategic roads, including the Shime roads, the Savietula–Anyanui stretch, the Galo-Sota to Bomigo route, the Anlo Afiadenyigba roads, and the Abor–Atiavi corridor, among other pressing issues.

The delegation emphasised the urgent need for government intervention to improve accessibility and enhance socio-economic activities across the affected communities.

The visit also provided an opportunity for the delegation to seek clarification on reports suggesting that the much anticipated West Africa Coastal Areas (WACA) Project in the Volta Region had been shelved.

Addressing these concerns, the Regional Minister firmly dismissed the claims, assuring the chiefs that the project remains on course.

According to Hon. James Gunu, “the World Bank has already released funding for portions of the initiative.”

He further revealed that a recent high-level meeting held in his office with the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA) confirmed the commencement of preparatory activities, including a scheduled one-week training programme in Aburi for three beneficiary districts in the Volta Region.

Reaffirming government’s commitment, the Minister stated that the administration of former President John Dramani Mahama remains resolute in ensuring the successful implementation of the project.

He explained that multiple ministries are currently coordinating efforts to finalize the necessary frameworks required for the full rollout of the programme.

Also co-leading the delegation were the Municipal and District Chief Executives for Keta and Anloga, who corroborated the Minister’s assurances.

They confirmed that officials from LUSPA had recently engaged their respective districts, outlining the preparatory processes required ahead of the official commencement of the project.

The WACA Project is widely regarded as a critical intervention for coastal communities, aimed at addressing erosion, flooding, and land degradation, while simultaneously improving livelihoods.

Meanwhile, recent reports few days ago indicate renewed incidents of coastal sea erosion in the Fuveme and Anyanui areas, a development that has heightened concerns over the urgent need for immediate and sustainable intervention measures.

Mr. Gunu urged calm among residents, stressing that there is no cause for alarm. “The project is very much alive, and government is committed to seeing it through to completion,” he assured.

Other discussions centered on the education sector, where they called for the provision of school buses to support some Senior High Schools within the enclave, aimed at improving access to education for students.

The delegation further raised key economic concerns, including the need for market modernization across the area to enhance local commerce and improve livelihoods. These issues, among others, were highlighted as critical to the holistic development of the Anlo State and the Volta Region.

The Anlo delegation comprised about 20 paramount chiefs and queen mothers, including Togbi Ahormene IV, Togbi Adoblanui II, Togbi Subo II, Mama Deaworfe II, and Mama Dzitu II, among others.

The meeting concluded on a note of mutual cooperation, with appreciation extended to Togbi Agbesi Awusu II and the Anlo Dukor for their proactive engagement.

Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to collaborative efforts aimed at safeguarding the coastline and accelerating development across the Volta Region.
