Support fund for helicopter crash victims’ children hits over GH¢2m

The Children’s Support Fund, set up by President John Dramani Mahama to care for the children of victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash, has so far raised GH¢2.315 million.
The update was shared in a statement by Dr Valerie Sawyerr, Senior Presidential Advisor and Coordinator of the Fund. She confirmed that the initiative is already receiving strong support from companies and institutions across the country.
President Mahama announced the creation of the fund on Friday, August 15, during the state funeral of the eight people who lost their lives in the crash. He explained that the fund would provide long-term support to the children, focusing on their education, welfare and overall well-being.
Government has expressed gratitude to Stanbic Bank Ghana, which made an initial seed donation of GHS 500,000, and to other companies that contributed, including Procus GH Limited, GB Foods Ghana, Sunda FM Manufacturing Ltd, Sage Distribution Ltd, Quantum Oil Terminals, Quantum LPG Logistics Ltd, Newgas Cylinder Ltd and Quantum Terminals PLC.
Dr Sawyerr said donations can be made through Stanbic Bank Ghana Limited, Stanbic Heights Branch, using designated Ghana cedi and US dollar accounts. Cheques and bank drafts should be made payable to “Children Support Fund 6825.” She assured the public that, for transparency, a list of donors will be published every week.
The helicopter crash, which occurred on Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi Akrofoum District of the Ashanti Region, claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Murtala Mohammed and six others, including three crew members. The tragedy sparked nationwide grief and tributes.
A solemn state funeral was held on August 15, attended by President Mahama, government officials, security services, traditional leaders and grieving families. It was at this ceremony that the president announced the fund to honour the memory of the victims by protecting the future of their children.
