President Mahama requests thorough investigation into election-related deaths
Accra, Ghana – The Office of the President has formally called on the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the tragic deaths of eight Ghanaians during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.
The request was made on behalf of former President John Dramani Mahama in a letter dated January 10, 2025, signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President.
The correspondence emphasised the need for an immediate inquiry into the incidents, which have significantly impacted Ghana’s democratic process. The objective is to ensure justice for the victims and their families.
Proposed Measures for Investigation
To guarantee a thorough and transparent investigation, the letter outlined key recommendations:
- Formation of a Dedicated Investigative Taskforce: A specialised team within the CID should focus exclusively on these cases to ensure effective and timely resolutions.
- Collaboration with Witnesses and Families: Comprehensive interviews should be conducted with eyewitnesses, victims’ families, and other relevant parties to gather crucial evidence.
- Review of Electoral Security Measures: An in-depth examination of the role and actions of security personnel deployed at polling stations during the elections is necessary to determine any lapses or misconduct.
- Utilization of Forensic Evidence: Advanced forensic techniques should be employed to analyze physical evidence, including bullet casings and other materials from the crime scenes.
- Engagement with Electoral and Civic Bodies: The Electoral Commission and other stakeholders should provide additional context and reports from the 2020 and 2024 elections to aid the investigation.
Call for Transparency
The Office of the President also urged the Ghana Police Service to maintain public trust by providing periodic updates on the progress of the investigations. This, it noted, would reassure the public of the government’s commitment to uncovering the truth and ensuring accountability.
The letter expressed confidence in the professionalism of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and their ability to deliver justice while safeguarding Ghana’s democratic values.
Support from the Presidency
The Office of the President assured the Ghana Police Service of its full support in facilitating the investigation.
Copies of the letter were also sent to the Vice President and the Chief of Staff at the Jubilee House.
This request underscores the administration’s dedication to addressing electoral violence and preserving the integrity of Ghana’s democratic system.
