Okada Rider Fatally Stabbed by Passenger in Samreboi Motorcycle Robbery

A 20-year-old commercial motorcyclist, popularly known as an okada rider, identified as Kwofie, has tragically lost his life after being allegedly stabbed to death by his passenger, Jacob—also known as Jaybad—during a robbery attempt.

The incident occurred on the evening of Monday, May 5, 2025, around 8:00 p.m., at Samreboi in the Western Region. According to eyewitness reports, the suspect, Jaybad, had requested a ride to Ohiampenika, a nearby town.

While en route and having passed through Amoaku—approximately 15 kilometers from Samreboi—Jaybad, who was seated at the back of the motorcycle, allegedly stabbed Kwofie from behind using a pair of scissors. He then ordered Kwofie to stop and surrender the motorbike.

A struggle ensued, but Kwofie, having sustained severe injuries, succumbed to excessive bleeding shortly after.

Following the incident, the suspect fled with the stolen motorcycle to Ohiampenika, where he reportedly sought refuge at the chief’s palace. Community members who had been alerted to the crime pursued him and surrounded the palace.

The police were called to the scene to arrest the suspect. However, tensions escalated as irate youth from Asuoshyime, the victim’s hometown, clashed with the police, demanding that the suspect be handed over for instant justice.

The agitation intensified at the Samreboi Police Station, where the crowd threatened to burn down the facility if Jaybad was not released to face mob justice. In response, a police reinforcement team was deployed, firing warning shots to disperse the angry crowd.

The suspect has since been transferred to the Asankrangwa District Police Command and is expected to be arraigned before court on Wednesday, May 7.
