NPP defends Ofori-Atta, dismisses OSP’s ‘fugitive’ tag as unjustified

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has described as unreasonable the decision by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to label Ken Ofori-Atta as a “fugitive of justice” and a “wanted man.”

According to the party, correspondence between Ken Ofori-Atta and the OSP debunks claims that he is evading interrogation.

At a press conference on Thursday, the party’s National Organizer noted that the timeline of events contradicts the anti-graft body’s position, as Ken Ofori-Atta left the country before being notified of the investigation and has since remained in touch with the OSP through his lawyers.

Henry Nana Boakye, outlining the events, explained that Ken Ofori-Atta not only notified former Chief of Staff Frema Osei Opare of his absence from the country on January 2 but also informed the current Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, of his absence on January 22.

He questioned how the Special Prosecutor could conclude that Ken Ofori-Atta was evading interrogation when the notice of the investigation was brought to the former Finance Minister’s attention two weeks after he had already left the country.

Moreover, Henry Nana Boakye argued that the OSP’s move is ill-motivated, contrary to reports that Ken Ofori-Atta is unwilling to appear for questioning.

Henry Nana Boakye further questioned why the Special Prosecutor, during the Airbus investigations, revealed that he traveled out of the country to interview Sam Adam Mahama, a brother of former President Mahama, but could not do the same for the former Finance Minister, who has provided proof of receiving medical attention and shared his contact details.

The party also debunked claims that Ken Ofori-Atta is evading accountability through his actions. Henry Nana Boakye referenced the probe into the Eurobond conflict of interest issue by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and the censure hearing by Parliament as evidence of Ken Ofori-Atta’s willingness to account to the Ghanaian people.

Additionally, the party criticized the government for the raid on Ken Ofori-Atta’s house.
