Nortsu-Kortoe lauds SHS Heads for Excellence Amid Challenges, Pledges Parliamentary Support for Infrastructure Improvement”

The Chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee on Education, Hon. Peter Kwasi Nortsu-Kortoe, has expressed satisfaction with the level of progress observed during a monitoring visit to selected Senior High Schools (SHSs) as part of a nationwide tour to assess educational infrastructure and standards.
During visits to Archbishop Porter Girls’ SHS, Adiembra SHS, and Ahantaman Girls’ SHS, the Committee interacted with school authorities, inspected facilities, and engaged students to gather firsthand information about the schools’ operations, needs, and challenges.
Speaking to the media after the tour, Hon. Nortsu-Kortoe commended the leadership of the various schools for their resilience and commitment to quality education despite existing infrastructural constraints.
“What we have seen gives us encouragement that, even within the difficult situations Heads of Institutions find themselves, they are doing well,” he noted.
“We are particularly impressed with their academic performance and the discipline maintained in the schools. Our investigations did not find any school with a low level of discipline, and that is highly commendable,” he added.
The Committee, according to Hon. Nortsu-Kortoe, is committed to presenting its findings to government and making strong recommendations aimed at addressing infrastructure deficits, completing stalled projects, and expanding facilities such as classrooms and dormitories. These efforts, he said, are geared towards enabling all year groups to be in school concurrently, thereby phasing out the double-track system still in operation in some institutions.
In addition to recommending improvements in physical infrastructure, the Committee also plans to urge the Minister for Education to seek financial clearance to recruit more non-teaching staff, including security personnel, to enhance the administration and safety of schools across the country.
The nationwide tour by the Select Committee on Education is part of Parliament’s oversight mandate to ensure that public resources allocated to the education sector are effectively utilized and that students and staff benefit from a conducive teaching and learning environment.
