National Service Authority Denies Allegations of Payroll Fraud and “Ghost Names”

Accra, December 16, 2024(VeritasNews) — The National Service Authority (NSA) has firmly refuted recent media allegations of payroll fraud and including “ghost names” on its payroll for 2018/2019 to 2023/2024.

In a press release signed by Director-General Osei Assibey Antwi, the NSA described the claims as baseless and unfounded.

The NSA highlighted the implementation of robust electronic measures since 2021, which have significantly improved transparency in mobilising and deploying National Service Personnel. These measures, including the use of the Ghana Card, facial verification systems, and eligibility proof from tertiary institutions, have reportedly saved the Authority over 300 million Ghana cedis in four years.

“The results and evidence of the elimination of attempted fraudsters in the National Service portal have been overwhelming and have effectively ended the presence of ‘ghost names’ in the system since 2021,” the statement noted.

Despite conducting an internal review following the allegations, the NSA found no merit in the claims. In response, the Authority’s Governing Board has called upon the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure transparency.

Protecting the NSA’s Reputation
The Authority expressed concern that these allegations could undermine its achievements and tarnish its reputation at a time when it has made significant strides in operational efficiency and resource management. It also encouraged the public to exercise restraint in their commentary to avoid inflicting irreparable harm on individuals who may ultimately be proven innocent.

Collaboration with Investigative Bodies
Acknowledging a petition filed by the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) to the Office of the Special Prosecutor, the NSA pledged its full cooperation in uncovering the facts. “The Authority welcomes this development and remains committed to ensuring that public resources are protected and utilized judiciously and responsibly,” the statement added.

Commitment to Transparency
The NSA reaffirmed its dedication to Ghana’s development and called on stakeholders to work collaboratively with the Authority to address any substantiated concerns.
