National Security seizes fake dollars and gold bars at Sapeiman

Accra- 09/02/2025      Ghana’s National Security has on Sunday morning seized a substantial large amounts of money including U.S. dollars and Ghanaian cedi notes with some suspected to be counterfeit alongside boxes containing items suspected to be gold bars following a tip-off conducted during a late-night raid.

These items were concealed within twelve 20-foot shipping containers located at a warehouse in Sapeiman, within the Ga South Municipality.

Upon further inspection, additional boxes containing suspected counterfeit currencies were found sealed with plywood and covered with charcoal and in wooden boxes covered with cement. The authorities also recovered fake Ghana Army uniforms and boots from the warehouse.

National Security operatives have disclosed that two of the containers remain unaccounted for and are currently being tracked. A manhunt is underway for four individuals linked to the crime, including the suspected ringleader popularly known as Alhaji.

This seizure highlights ongoing concerns about counterfeit currency and fraudulent gold transactions in the country.

Recently, in response to such challenges, the government of Ghana has announced plans to establish a Gold Board aimed towards streamlining gold purchases from small-scale miners, increasing earnings, and reducing smuggling, an initiative aimed to enhance benefits from gold sales and support national currency stability.

The recent seizure underscores the importance of these initiatives and the need for continued vigilance against illicit activities that threaten the nation’s economic and security interests.
