KETASCO Alumni Join Calls for Immediate Reversal of Sharks Quiz Re-run Decision

The KETASCO Past Students’ Association has joined growing calls for the immediate reversal of the decision to re-run the controversial quarterfinal tie-breaker in the Sharks Quiz Competition

In an official statement dated March 20, 2026, signed by Mr Makafui Etse Dotse, Secretary of the KPAA, and addressed to all media houses, the Association expressed “unequivocal” opposition to the directive by the Sharks Quiz Academic Board to replay the decisive contest between Keta Senior High Technical School (KETASCO) and St. Augustine’s College (AUGUSCO).

Clear Demands Issued

At the heart of the statement is a set of three firm and immediate demands directed at the quiz organisers, including

Immediate rescission of the decision to re-run the contest

Formal declaration of KETASCO as the rightful winners of the quarterfinal

Public reaffirmation of commitment to fairness, consistency, and academic integrity

The Association emphasised that these steps are not optional but represent the only just and logical resolution following the developments surrounding the contest.

Basis for the Demands

According to the statement, KETASCO had provided the correct answer at the decisive tie-breaker stage, a position the alumni say has already been validated by the Quiz Jury and Academic Board after review.

They argue that this acknowledgement effectively settles the matter, insisting that: “Once a decisive question is correctly answered, the contest concludes.”

The Association further maintains that any adjudication error should be corrected by upholding the valid answer and adjusting the outcome accordingly, rather than ordering a replay.

The alumni body criticised the re-run directive as inconsistent with established principles of fair adjudication, warning that it: also introduces unnecessary uncertainty, undermines the integrity of the original performance and unfairly disadvantages a team that had already secured victory on merit, stressing that allowing a replay despite confirming the correctness of KETASCO’s answer sets a dangerous precedent for academic competitions.

Beyond the immediate contest, the Association framed the issue as one affecting the credibility of academic competitions broadly.

“This matter extends beyond a single contest, adding that stakeholder confidence in such competitions depends on consistent application of rules and respect for merit.

The statement also revealed that the position of the alumni is aligned with the management of Keta Senior High Technical School, presenting a unified front in rejecting the re-run decision.

Final Warning to Organizers

Concluding the statement, the Association urged the Academic Board and Jury to act swiftly, warning that failure to correct the decision would amount to injustice.

“When truth is clear, hesitation becomes injustice,” the statement declared.

Background

The controversy follows a disputed tie-breaker outcome in the quarterfinal stage of the ongoing Sharks Quiz, where an initial ruling has since been reviewed, leading to the decision to re-run the contest.

However, the management of KETASCO and their alumni insist that the review itself confirms their case, making a reply unnecessary and unjustified.

What Happens Next

All eyes are now on the Sharks Quiz Academic Board, as stakeholders await a response to the demands.

The outcome is expected to not only determine the fate of the quarterfinal contest but also shape perceptions of fairness and integrity within one of Ghana’s prominent academic competitions.
