GNAT Issues Ultimatum Over Assault on Teacher in Offinso
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has demanded urgent action from the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ghana Police Service to prosecute a student who allegedly stabbed a teacher in the left eye at Asuoso Senior High School in Offinso. The association has given a three-day deadline for action, warning of potential industrial unrest if their demand is not met.
Speaking to journalists, Daniel Opoku, GNAT General Secretary, Thomas Musah Tanko, condemned the incident and expressed frustration over the inaction of relevant authorities.
He revealed that the incident occurred on November 8, when the teacher confronted a loitering student and asked them to return to the classroom. The confrontation escalated, leading to the student stabbing the teacher in the left eye.
The attack has left the teacher permanently blind in one eye, raising concerns about his long-term welfare.
Mr. Tanko criticized the lack of response from the authorities, stating, “The teacher has lost his left eye, meaning that for the rest of his life, he will be going through life with only one eye. His medical bills and all those things, who will take care of it?”
He further warned of severe consequences if the authorities fail to act swiftly, saying, “That’s why we are, by this medium, telling the duty bearers—the Ghana Education Service and the Ghana Police Service—that if by next week we do not hear anything positive, we will decide the next line of action.”
GNAT has signaled its readiness to mobilize teachers for industrial action should there be further delays in addressing the issue. The association also called for better protection of teachers and stricter enforcement of disciplinary measures to ensure safety and order in schools.
This incident highlights growing concerns over student indiscipline and teacher safety in Ghanaian schools. Both the GES and the Ghana Police Service are yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
