GJA condemns assault on journalists by military personnel at Walewale

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) branch in the Northern Regional has strongly condemned the alleged assault on two journalists by the military personnel at Walewale in the North East Region of Ghana.

Mr Tahiru Ibrahim of Zaa Multimedia and Mr Alhassan Dokurugu of Asaase Radio, were reportedly attacked while covering the incident involving the burning of a warehouse near the Nalerigu Junction in Walewale.

According to the statement by GJA, the assault occurred in the presence of police officers, a situation the Association says it raises concerns about press freedom and the protection of journalists’ human rights. “We view this incidence as a blatant attack on press freedom and gross violation of the fundamental human rights of the journalist,” The statement said

The Association is calling on the Military Command to identify and discipline the personnel involved in the incident.

Additionally, they urged the Ghana Police Service to investigate the matter and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book.

Mr Yakubu Abdul-Majeed, GJA Chairman, Northern Region, who signed the statement emphasized the importance of safeguarding the rights of all citizens, including journalists, in a civilized society. The GJA reiterated its commitment to defending press freedom and ensuring the safety of media practitioners in the country.
