Asantehene pledges to resolve Bawku conflict

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has pledged to resolve the Bawku conflict, emphasising that allowing violence to escalate and cause destruction would be detrimental.
He assured that he would handle the traditional aspects of the resolution process while urging the Ministers of Defence Dr Omane Boamah and Interior, Muntaka Mubarak along with the Chief of Defence Staff, to take charge of the security measures.
The Defence Minister welcomed Otumfuo’s commitment to restoring peace in Bawku, expressing optimism that his intervention would help bring lasting stability.
He also emphasised that the security ministries are actively working to address the situation.
These remarks were made when the Defence Minister, Interior Minister, and Chief of Defence Staff paid a courtesy call to Otumfuo on Friday, February 14, 2025, to discuss strategies for resolving the Bawku conflict.
“We need to resolve the conflict to avoid external interference. We will try everything possible to end the conflict. If we take out politics and go by the truth, peace will prevail.”
On his part, the Defence Minister, Dr Omane Boamah expressed confidence in the Asantehene to restore peace, stability and security to Bawku.
“As we have assured, President Mahama is very committed to securing sustainable peace in Bawku and its environs. We have taken critical steps, we have met Members of Parliament in the affected area in the Upper East region.
“The Chief of the Defence Staff was also part of the meeting, as a result, he has beefed up personnel on the ground. Beyond that is also the critical aspect of the traditional resolution of the matter. And that is why we have decided to come and meet Otumfuo. Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo tasked Otumfuo to address the traditional aspect of the dispute and so, as we work on the security bit.
“We need to look at it in two track manner, the security and also the traditional. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has given firm assurances that he’s working on it and even today [February 14], he’s meeting sections of the dispute. We’re very confident that he will be able to restore peace, stability and security to the good people of Bawku.”
