Anlo Chiefs expresses gratitude for Dr Asiama’s appointment as Governor of BoG

A collation of traditional authorities in Anloland in the Volta Region dubbed Anlo Dukor (State) Council has expressed its profound gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for the appointment of Dr Johnson Asiama as the new Governor of the country’s central bank, the Bank of Ghana.
In a press statement released on February 15, 2025, and signed by Togbi Agbesi Awusu II, the Awadada of Anlo (Dukor) State, the Council appreciated President John Mahama for his commitment to experience, competence, and integrity in making his appointments so far. Togbi exclusively congratulated all those appointed from the Volta Region so far, both state minsiters and heads of agencies.
Dr Asiama’s expertise and experience were highly eulogised by the Chiefs in the statement saying;
“Dr Asiama’s track record as a seasoned economist and central banking expert makes him the ideal choice to lead the Bank of Ghana at this crucial moment, His wealth of experience, particularly in monetary policy formulation and financial sector stability is a viable asset that will guide Ghana’s economist recovery and ensure a resilient system,”
They also said, his extensive background makes him the ideal candidate to lead the Bank of Ghana during this crucial period of economic recovery and resilience.
His steadfastness and dedication to national service were identified by the Council also despite facing politically motivated attacks and allegations over the years, “His exoneration and subsequent appointment are a testament to his competence and unwavering dedication to national service.”
The Anlo Dukor Council also reaffirmed its full support for the new governor as he took over to guide Ghana’s Central Bank towards economic stability and growth. It called on all Ghanaians to rally behind him, stating,
“We urge all well-meaning Ghanaians to support him as he works to restore confidence in the financial system, promote sound monetary policies, and ensure the overall economic well-being of our nation.” The statement concluded.
The Council expressed confidence that under Dr. Asiama’s leadership, the Central Bank would regain its strength and fulfil its mandate to the people of Ghana.
Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama who is an Akpini from Kpando holds PhD in Economics from the University of Southampton, UK (2001-2005), an MPhil in Economics (1994-1996) and a BA (Hons) in Economics with Statistics (1991-1993) all from the University of Ghana, Legon.
He was the Assistant Director of the Research Department at the Bank of Ghana from 2014 to 2016 before ascending as Deputy Governor from May 2016 to January 2018, where he played crucial roles in Research and Statistics, Banking Supervision, Financial Stability, and the Banking and Finance departments. Outside the shores of Ghana, He worked as Director of the Macroeconomic Department at the West African Institute for Financial and Economic Management from April 2010 to August 2013.
This call from the Council proves the Regional support Dr Asiama receives from the Volta Region and it comes at a time when His appointment is widely criticised by some Ghanaians particularly from the New Patriotic Party.
