President Mahama removes Chief Justice Torkonoo from office

Accra, Sept. 1, 2025

President John Dramani Mahama has officially removed Madam Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo from office as the Chief Justice with immediate effect.

This was contained in an official press release from the Presidency signed by Mr Felix Ofosu Kwakye on Monday morning.

According to the statement, it was done in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution.

The decision follows a petition by a Ghanaian citizen, Daniel Ofori, and a subsequent inquiry by a committee which established grounds of stated misbehavior under Article 146(1) and recommended her removal.
