International Day of Mathematics; KETASCO marked day with a series of engaging activities

Keta Senior High Technical School (KETASCO) in the Volta Region has successfully marked the International Day of Mathematics with a series of engaging academic activities aimed at deepening students’ appreciation of mathematics and its practical applications. The event, which was observed on Friday March 14th 2025, aligning with the global commemoration.

Celebrated under the auspices of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) in partnership with IMAGINARY, on the theme, “Mathematics and Creativity in Art and Education”, the event aims to emphasise the connection between the subject, creativity, and its indispensable role in various fields, particularly in education and artistic expression.

To achieve this aim, the Mathematics Department at KETASCO, collaborated with the school’s administration, designed a series of activities to engage both students and members of staff, fostering a deeper appreciation of mathematical concepts beyond the classroom.

The first activity of the day involved an interactive two-hour mathematics practical class across all classrooms, facilitated by non-mathematics teachers on “Algebraic Expressions Combined with Plane Geometry, which provided students with a practical understanding of how algebraic concepts integrate with geometric principles. They applied algebraic expression principles in realizing plane geometric shapes such as a rhombus

Following the classroom sessions, a symposium was held at the school’s assembly ground, for both staff and students. The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Amegago Delalinam, a Mathematic tutor, In his presentation, he highlighted the symbiotic relationship between mathematics and art, illustrating how mathematical concepts such as symmetry, proportion, and geometric patterns are foundational to artistic creativity. He further highlighted how artists, architects, and designers rely on mathematical precision to create aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound works.

One major highlight of the celebration was the “Circle Theorem Game”, an academic contest designed to test students’ understanding of circle theorems through a competitive format. This interactive game allowed the competitors to learn and apply key theorems related to circles, such as angles in a semicircle, cyclic quadrilaterals, and tangent properties. The contest was held between all seven departments in the school

Each department accumulated points based on the accuracy of their responses and calculations. After a keenly contested battle, the General Arts Department emerged victorious, securing nine points. They were closely followed by the Visual Arts Department with eight points, while the Technical Department placed third with six points. The Science and Home Economics Departments each scored three points, whereas the Agricultural Science Department obtained two points.

To climax the day, a quiz competition was organized among the three accommodation blocks of the school namely; City Block (Abruqua House 1 and 3), Zongo Block (Houses 2 and 4), PTA Block (Matanawui House 5)

The quiz featured a series of rigorous mathematical questions ranging from algebra and geometry to probability and trigonometry. After a closely fought contest, City Block emerged as the overall winner, demonstrating outstanding mathematical proficiency.

To recognize the efforts of participants, all contestants in both the Circle Theorem Game and the quiz competition were awarded certificates of participation. Additionally, winners of the quiz received an undisclosed cash reward, courtesy of the Mathematics Department.

Mr Godfried Deku, Head of the Mathematics Department who coordinated the activities, expressed his utmost appreciation for the entire staff for availing themselves to mark the day, He rated the students’ involvement to be very immersed.

Important formulae of mathematical operations were inscribed on cards and pasted on structures on the campus, an initiative that allows students to interact with the formulas for clarifications

Bishop Ahiati Bless, the Keta Municipal Science and Mathematic coordinator who graced the program also called on the students to develop a sense of likeness for the subject, He admonished them to “think mathematically in everything that they do as adolescents,”

Keta Senior High Technical School is noted for its remarkable academic prowess, particularly in terms of Science and mathematics education, a situation which is evidenced in the School’s performance in the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) competition. KETASCO have appeared at the semi-finals severally and finalist in 2021

The school remains committed to fostering a strong mathematics culture, equipping students with the analytical and problem-solving skills needed to thrive in their academic and professional pursuits.
