Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi convicted for contempt; Court issues bench warrant

A Koforidua High Court has convicted Mr Ernest Yaw Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region.
This ruling was necessitated by his defiance of an interim injunction preventing him from being sworn in as an MP
Earlier, the court restrained the MP from presenting himself for swearing-in on January 6th 2025, pending the resolution of a legal dispute. However, despite this directive, Mr Kumi proceeded to take the oath of office in Parliament, an action that caused him to defile the court’s injunctions. Citing immersed evidence of wilful defiance, the court ruled that Mr Kumi had acted in contempt.
Justice Senyo Amedahe, the Presiding Judge, who ruled also issued a bench warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear before the court for sentencing.
Meanwhile, all attempts by the Minority Caucus in Parliament through an official letter to justify his absence from the hearing were dismissed by the judge who said that the directive should have come from either the Speaker of Parliament or the Clerk of Parliament.
Mr Ernest Yaw Kumi the member of parliament elected on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party for Akwatia had his election under contention since December 7 2025, a matter which has been before the court since then and barring him from being sworn in as a lawmaker.
