President Mahama swears in 9th Council of State; Doe Adjaho appointed as Chairman

President John Dramani Mahama has sown in members of Ghana’s 9th Council of State to serve as his counsel to propel the affairs of the State

The ceremony which was held on the evening of Tuesday, February 18 2025, at the Jubilee House was attended by all the thirty-one (31) members across the country with their families and loved ones.

Right Honourable Edward Doe Adhajo, former Speaker of Ghana’s 6th Parliament, was elected as chairman of the Council, He will be responsible for coordinating counsel duties for the President.

Mr Adjaho was among the president’s 11 appointees, He served as a member of Parliament for the people of Ave-Avenor Constituency in the Volta Region from 1992 to 2013 when he was eventually elected as the Speaker of Parliament and served from 2013 to 2017.

The 68-year-old experienced lawyer is expected to enrich President Mahama’s Council with legal and governance expertise.

According to Articles 89 -92 of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana, the Council of State is established and responsible for advising the President in the execution of his national duties. Membership includes former Chief Justices, former Chiefs of the Defence Staff, and former Inspectors-General of Police, each appointed by the President in consultation with Parliament. The other members are the President of the National House of Chiefs, one representative from each of the 16 Regions, and 11 additional appointments to be made by the President.

They also play a key role in considering appointments that require constitutional or legal consultation by the President. The electoral commission conducted an election to select 16 regional representations after which the President appointed eleven other members as stipulated in the constitution

The current Council of State comes with a mix of both young and old, academicians, technocrats and people with diverse backgrounds.
