Women group in Anyanui empowered on rights, safety, and national responsibility

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) office in the Anloga District has partnered with the Community Development and Social Welfare Department and the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), to host an impactful community sensitisation program for the Anyanui Tsormenyo Corridor Women Association to educate them on women empowerment and their collective role in shaping the nation’s future.

Anyanui Tsormenyo Corridor Women Association is a group made up of traders, farmers, fishmongers, and mangrove growers in the area.

The program which was, held early in February is was part of the broader outreached program by the NCCE under their theme, “Ghana’s future, our collective responsibility,”

Togbi Hatsu III, the District Director of the NCCE, addressed the gathering by stressing the importance of women’s participation in decision-making processes.

He stated that, despite women making up a significant portion of the population, they are often overlooked in key discussions.

He urged the women to stay informed about laws and regulations that directly affect their lives, especially in areas such as marriage, child-rearing, and personal welfare, emphasising the critical role of women, who are the backbone of families and communities, in building a better and more prosperous country.

“Ghana’s future is our collective responsibility, and as women who make up a major part of Ghana’s population, we have taken it upon ourselves to uphold your safety and education in the law,” Togbi Hatsu III assured.

He reminded the women that the future of Ghana lies in their hands and that their active participation is key to creating positive change. He also assured them that the NCCE would continue engaging with the community to ensure ongoing education and awareness on the issues discussed.

Lawrence Woedi, Fire Officer ADO 1, who led the GNFS team, educated participants on fire safety precautions, particularly at the kitchens and workplaces, particularly relevant to the fishmongers and food vendors in attendance.

Education on how to use life jackets when engaging in activities along the river, particularly for those involved in the mangrove business, to prevent drowning incidents.

ADO 1 Woedi provided practical demonstrations on how to use fire extinguishers and life jackets effectively.

In addition, Mr. Sylvester Kodzo Deku, the Community Development and Social Welfare Officer, engaged the women in promoting peace and unity in households.

He revealed how some women in their communities were silently enduring abusive relationships encouraging them to be mindful of their rights and seek help when needed.

He taught them how they could utilize state institutions such as the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), the NCCE and the Social Welfare Department for support in times of distress.

Mr Deku further advised the young women present to ensure that customary and legal rights are appropriately followed before entering marriage, stressing the importance of respect and dignity in suchrelationships.

The session was part of a broader outreach program that also included visits to basic schools, markets, radio stations, and community information centers in the District, aiming at educating the public about the NCCE’s theme for the year, “Ghana’s future, our collective responsibility,” and to engage communities in discussions about their roles in national development.

This initiative is expected to have a lasting impact on the women of the Anyanui Tsormenyo Corridor, equipping them with essential knowledge and skills to make informed decisions, safeguard their homes, and contribute to the growth of the nation.
