Vice President engages Israeli envoys on first day in office
The vice President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang welcomed a high-level delegation from the Israeli government, led by Ambassador Roey Gilad and Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Sharren Haskel.
The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations, with particular emphasis on economic recovery and food security.
The Vice President underscored Ghana’s commitment to collaborating with Israel, highlighting the critical need for support in rebuilding the economy, especially in enhancing food security. The Israeli envoys expressed keen interest in mutual cooperation and pledged to facilitate further discussions to explore future collaborations.
Ghana and Israel share a longstanding history of diplomatic relations, dating back to 1958 when then Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir visited Ghana. Over the years, both nations have engaged in various cooperative ventures, particularly in agriculture and technology. Israel’s expertise in agricultural innovation, such as drip irrigation and greenhouse technologies, has been instrumental in supporting Ghana’s agricultural sector.
In recent years, Israel has demonstrated readiness to deploy its knowledge and capabilities to support Ghana in improving agriculture to enhance food security. Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen, during his visit to Ghana in July 2023, emphasized Israel’s willingness to assist Ghana in becoming a food exporter by leveraging Israeli expertise in agritech and water technologies.
Additionally, Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation (MASHAV) has been actively involved in capacity-building programs in Ghana. Since 2018, close to 600 young Ghanaian agricultural graduates and students have benefited from the Foreign Trainees in Agriculture Program in Israel, focusing on practical and professional knowledge transfer in the field of agriculture.
The recent engagement between the Vice President and the Israeli delegation signifies a renewed commitment to deepening the partnership between Ghana and Israel. Both nations are poised to collaborate on initiatives that will drive economic growth and ensure food security, leveraging shared expertise and innovative solutions.
