Man who “walked” from Kumasi to Accra for John Mahama’s inauguration honoured with a car

65-Year-Old Alhaji Ayaana Yakubu Honored with Renault KWID and Cash Rewards for Patriotic Journey

Alhaji Ayaana Yakubu, a 65-year-old man who allegedly trekked from Kumasi to Accra in honour of President John Dramani Mahama’s January 7th inauguration, has received significant recognition for his remarkable gesture.

A kind-hearted benefactor, who chose to remain anonymous, awarded Alhaji Ayaana a brand-new Renault KWID, a cash gift of an undisclosed amount, and shopping vouchers valued at GH¢5,000.

The formal presentation at Independence Square on January 8, 2025, was hosted by renowned media personality Kofi Okyere Darko, popularly known as KOD. Sharing the heartfelt moment on Instagram, KOD posted a video of Alhaji Ayaana receiving the car keys and stepping into his new vehicle, visibly overwhelmed with emotion.

While Alhaji Ayaana’s feat has drawn widespread attention, some uncertainties linger regarding the accuracy of claims that he walked the entire distance from Kumasi to Accra. However the media was unable to independently verify whether the journey was completed as reported.

Alhaji Ayaana is well-known for his dedication to patriotic causes. His recent walk, which he described as a celebration of Ghana’s democracy, is one of many symbolic acts he has undertaken over the years.

In 1997, He embarked on a walk to commemorate former President Jerry John Rawlings’ second-term inauguration. In 1999, he also led a 16-kilometre peace and health walk in Tamale, advocating for unity and well-being.

KOD revealed that the anonymous donor was deeply moved by Alhaji Ayaana’s determination and felt inspired to acknowledge his efforts with these generous gifts.

Mr. Alhaji Ayaana showed gratitude for the recognition and support for the he had received. He disclosed how many, discouraged him from undertaking the journey due to his health concerns.

“Although I had lot of discouragement from people, including my children, on health grounds, I was determined that the walk was for a good cause,” he stated.

Mr Ayanaa thanked everyone who played a role in achieving his dream, emphasising his appreciation for the love shown to him.
