From the Pitch to Leadership: Dr Wuaku Says Ghana’s Sports Revival Must Benefit Everyone

Administrator of the Ghana Sports Fund, Dr David Kofi Wuaku, has urged Ghanaians to seize the growing opportunities in sports and play active roles in shaping the future of the industry.

He says the gradual resurgence of sports presents an important opportunity not only for athletes but also for administrators, entrepreneurs, young professionals and other stakeholders to demonstrate leadership.

Dr Wuaku made the call during the 2026 Democracy Cup in Kumasi, where he reflected on the growing activities and interest surrounding sports in the country.

“Sports is gradually picking up,” he said, describing the development as an opportunity for everybody to earn their leadership.

He said Ghana must take advantage of the renewed momentum to build a sports industry capable of creating opportunities, nurturing talent and contributing to national development.

According to him, sports should no longer be viewed only from the perspective of competition and entertainment, but as an industry with significant potential for employment, investment and economic growth.

He therefore called for greater collaboration among stakeholders to ensure that the opportunities emerging from sports are properly harnessed.

Dr Wuaku said effective leadership and sustainable financing would be essential to transforming Ghana’s sporting potential into lasting benefits.

The Ghana Sports Fund has been established under Act 1159 to mobilise, manage and disburse resources for the development of sports.

The Fund is expected to support efforts aimed at creating a stronger, better-financed and more sustainable sports ecosystem in Ghana.
