Government to Replace Grid-Powered Streetlights with Solar Systems Nationwide

Accra – August 23 2026
The government has announced plans to replace conventional, grid-powered streetlights with solar-powered systems across the country as part of efforts to improve reliability and reduce disruptions.
Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, said the decision means all new streetlight projects and replacements will adopt solar technology, allowing individual faults to be isolated without affecting other lights.
He said the initiative is being led by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor.
Mr. Agbodza also disclosed that the recent failure of traffic lights at the Tema end of the motorway was not caused by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), as initially suspected, but resulted from the removal of underground cables.
According to him, government will therefore engage a new contractor to completely rewire the affected traffic-light system.
