Transport Ministry Begins Feasibility Study for Keta-Axim Water Transport System

The Ministry of Transport has signed a six-month contract with Vision Consult, in collaboration with KPMG, to undertake a feasibility study for the proposed Coastal Water Transport Service.

The study will assess the viability of establishing a coastal water transport route connecting Keta in the Volta Region to Axim in the Western Region.

The proposed service is intended to provide an additional transportation option along Ghana’s coastline and improve connectivity between coastal communities in the two regions.

The study is expected to assess the technical, operational, and economic viability of establishing a coastal water transport route along Ghana’s eastern and western coastlines and to determine its potential to provide an alternative mode of transportation for coastal communities and travellers.

Under the agreement, Vision Consult and KPMG will undertake the necessary feasibility assessments and present their findings and recommendations to the Government at the end of the six-month study period.

The outcome of the study will serve as a key basis for the Government’s decision on whether the proposed coastal water transport service is viable and should proceed to the development stage.

According to the Ministry of Transport, the initiative forms part of efforts to explore alternative transportation systems and improve connectivity along Ghana’s coastline.

If found feasible and subsequently implemented, the proposed service could provide an additional transportation option for residents, businesses and travellers between communities in the Volta and Western regions, while potentially improving access and movement along the coastal corridor.

The proposed Keta-Axim route is also expected to contribute to the diversification of Ghana’s transport network by complementing existing road-based transportation and creating another avenue for the movement of people and potentially goods along the coast.

The Ministry said the feasibility study would therefore provide the necessary evidence and technical basis to guide decisions on the potential development of the service.

The Government’s decision on the project will ultimately depend on the findings and recommendations of Vision Consult and KPMG following the completion of the study.
