Women farmers at Anyanui-Wededeanu in the Anloga Constituency are set to strengthen year-round vegetable production following the donation of water pumps by the Member of Parliament for the area, Mr Richard Kwame Sefe.
The intervention, presented on over the weekend at Wededeanu near Anyanui, is expected to ease one of the major challenges that confronts vegetable farmers in the area such as access to reliable irrigation for crop production, particularly during periods of inadequate rainfall.
The equipment which were ten (10) ACm centrifugal water pumps were donated to the Peculiar Ladies Association.
Vegetable farming remains an important source of livelihood for many households in the Anloga District with Anyanui and it’s adjorning communities serving as a major area, where farmers cultivate crops including tomatoes, shallots, pepper, okra, lettuce among others.
However, the nature of these crops requires regular access to water, making irrigation critical to sustaining production beyond the rainy season.
For many smallholder farmers like women at Anyanui-Wededeanu, the cost of purchasing and operating irrigation equipment has been a major constraint. These pumps are therefore expected to reduce the burden on the women, improve access to water for their farms and enable them to cultivate more consistently throughout the year.
The Peculiar Ladies Association is a more than 50-member women’s group engaged in crop farming, fishing and other local economic activities.
Mr Sefe said the intervention was aimed at helping women farmers expand their production, improve productivity and reduce their dependence on rainfall.
“I believe that empowering our farmers especially women farmers with the right tools is essential to strengthening agriculture and creating sustainable livelihoods for our people,” he said.
The MP also used the engagement to express solidarity with farmers who were affected by the recent flooding linked to the Keta Lagoon and other adjoining water bodies causing significant loss of crops.
“I deeply share in their pain and understand the devastating impact these losses can have on families whose livelihoods depend largely on farming,” Mr Sefe said.
He assured affected farmers that he would continue engaging relevant authorities to ensure that they are considered under appropriate government interventions and support programmes targeted at farmers affected by the floods whiles he tries to provide some supports himself.
Mr Sefe said agriculture remained central to the economic wellbeing of communities in the constituency and pledged to continue advocating practical interventions that would empower farmers, particularly women, to expand their economic opportunities.
Beneficiaries who spoke to Veritas News GH expressed appreciation to the MP for the support, describing the irrigation equipment as timely and important to sustaining farming activities in the area.
They said access to the pumps would make it easier for them to maintain their farms during dry periods and improve their ability to produce vegetables for the local market.
Beyond the immediate benefit to the beneficiaries, the intervention is expected to contribute to increased agricultural activity in Anyanui-Wededeanu by supporting continuous vegetable production, strengthening household incomes and improving the livelihoods of women who depend on farming and related activities.
