Jamaican Indep Day: President Mahama to Receive Special Honours as Ghana-Jamaica Ties Strengthen

The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) has announced a ceremonial gun salute in honour of President John Dramani Mahama during his state visit to Jamaica from July 29 to August 3, underscoring the deepening diplomatic ties between the two nations.
The salute, to be fired during Guard of Honour rehearsals and the official parade at King’s House, forms part of military traditions reserved for visiting heads of state.
President Mahama’s visit comes as Jamaica commemorates its 64th Independence and Emancipation celebrations and is widely seen as recognition of Ghana’s solidarity with the Caribbean nation, particularly its support for Jamaica’s post-Hurricane Melissa rebuilding efforts.
In December 2025, Ghana deployed 54 personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces’ 14 Engineer Brigade to assist with reconstruction after the hurricane, which claimed more than 40 lives and caused an estimated US$8.8 billion in damage. The mission showed the longstanding friendship between Ghana and Jamaica and strengthened cooperation between Ghana and the African diaspora.
The JDF has advised residents around King’s House and neighbouring communities to expect loud explosions during the ceremonies, assuring the public that the gunfire is purely ceremonial and poses no threat to public safety.
