KETA, (Volta Volta) — July 2026

Lawyer Lom Nuku Ahlijah, A community development advocate, has called for stronger collective responsibility in environmental sanitation, warning that preventing future flooding requires sustained action beyond emergency responses.

He said the recent floods should serve as a reminder that communities must prioritise proper waste management, protect drainage systems, and work closely with local authorities to safeguard the environment.

Mr. Ahlijah made the call after donating sanitation equipment to the Keta Municipal Assembly to support the Two-Day National General Cleaning  and ongoing flood recovery efforts across the municipality.

“Preventing disasters is not only about responding after heavy rains; it begins with keeping our surroundings clean, protecting our drains, and taking collective responsibility for our environment,” Mr. Ahlijah said.

He added that effective environmental management requires collaboration among citizens, government institutions, traditional authorities, businesses, and civil society organisations.

“The Assembly and the Zonal Councils will be at the forefront of coordinating this exercise, and it is important that we support them with the tools they need to succeed,” he stated.

Mr. Ahlijah urged residents of Keta Municipality to actively participate in the National General Cleaning Days and make sanitation a daily civic responsibility.

His donation included cutlasses, shovels, spades, boots, headpans, hand gloves, and wheelbarrows to enhance cleanup activities in flood-affected communities.

Several communities within the Keta Municipality are currently experiencing severe flooding following the overflow of the Keta Lagoon. Affected areas include Kedzikofe, Keta, Vui, Anlo-Afiadenyigba, Mamime, Atiavi, Anyako, Seva, and communities around the Amugo-Wego area, among others.
