Labour Minister Urges Dialogue to Prevent Strikes, Calls Harmony Strategic

The Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, has described industrial harmony as a strategic national priority, stressing government’s commitment to strengthening dialogue mechanisms to resolve labour disputes before they escalate into industrial action.

Speaking at the opening of a three-day National Labour Conference in Ho, he said government is building stronger platforms for engagement with social partners to reduce strikes and promote sustained workplace stability.

Dr. Pelpuo noted that the approach forms part of broader efforts to ensure workers’ concerns are addressed while safeguarding the legitimate interests of employers through fair and credible dispute resolution systems.

He commended labour stakeholders for maintaining relative stability over the past year and a half, adding that there has been growing commitment to placing national interest above sectoral differences.

He also highlighted government’s long-term labour strategy under the Ghana Decent Work Country Programme III (2026–2030), developed in collaboration with the International Labour Organization, which focuses on job creation, social protection, and rights at work.

According to him, the Ministry is also adopting modern administrative practices to improve efficiency within the labour sector.

Looking ahead, Dr. Pelpuo disclosed that stakeholders will soon reconvene with Parliament to review the Labour Bill 2026, which will incorporate reforms to address technological changes, including the impact of artificial intelligence on the world of work.

He said the reforms are aimed at ensuring that labour laws remain relevant while protecting workers and strengthening Ghana’s evolving labour system.
