The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has revealed that the Kpone Landfill Site has only one month of operational life remaining, raising concerns over an imminent waste management crisis.
The Minister made this known on Monday, 23rd February 2026, during a working visit to the landfill site to assess ongoing waste management operations and reaffirm the Ministry’s commitment to sustainable sanitation, environmental protection, and climate-responsive local governance.
According to him, the situation is critical, as hospitals, homes, and industries could soon be left with no designated place to dispose of refuse if urgent measures are not taken.
He warned that failure to address the issue promptly could result in a serious public health emergency.

Describing the looming development as a potential public health crisis, the Minister pledged swift and decisive action to prevent a breakdown in sanitation services. He emphasized the need for immediate intervention, long-term planning, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to safeguard public health and protect the environment.
The visit forms part of broader efforts by the Ministry to strengthen waste management systems and ensure sustainable environmental practices across the country.
