Borussia Dortmund launches first African football academy in Ghana

Borussia Dortmund, one of Germany’s leading football clubs, has extended its global reach by launching its first African academy.

The academy, named “BVB International Academy Ghana”, in Accra, was developed in partnership with Accra Shooting Stars FC.

The academy serves as a talent hub for young footballers by training boys and girls aged 6–18 years, using Dortmund’s proven youth development model.

The program combines football training with education, discipline, leadership, nutrition, and personal development while staying rooted in Ghana’s football culture.

Mr Ibrahim Tanko, a former Borussia Dortmund midfielder and Ghana Black Stars legend, who will serve as the academy’s ambassador, said the initiative will nurture not only technical ability but also the mindset and discipline needed to succeed at the highest level.

Director of Internationalisation and Commercial Partnerships and Managing Director of the BVB Football Academy, Benedikt Scholz, described the initiative as both symbolic and strategic.

BVB International Academy Ghana is formally registered with the Ghana Football Association and will operate in accordance with state-of-the-art and FIFA-standard football training rules

Mr Benedikt Scholz disclosed that the Academy will inculcate community impact into its core mandates, saying that twenty per cent of its intake will be reserved for scholarships targeting talented but underprivileged children from surrounding communities, supported through community scouting and school outreach programmes.
